Old furnace making scary noises – looking for a reliable tech in Toronto
Hey Toronto folks, I’m living in one of those older semi-detached houses near High Park, and I think my HVAC system is finally staging a protest. Last night it started making this high-pitched whistling sound, almost like a tea kettle, and the air coming out of the vents is barely lukewarm. I’m honestly a bit terrified to turn it off in case it never starts again, but I’m also scared it might just explode if I leave it on! Does anyone have a go-to person for this? I’ve had bad luck in the past with companies that charge a "diagnostic fee" that costs more than the actual repair, or guys who show up, look at the furnace for five minutes, and immediately start writing a quote for a $10,000 replacement. I just want an honest technician who can tell me if it’s a simple belt fix or if I really need to start saving up. Any recommendations for someone who won't rip me off?

I totally feel your pain! Living in an older Toronto home is a constant battle with the mechanicals. We had a similar "whistling" issue two months ago, and I was convinced the furnace was about to launch into space. My neighbor, who is super picky about contractors, told me to check out these guys for hvac services Toronto https://superiorhvacservice.ca/toronto/ and I’m so glad I listened.
The tech they sent was great—he actually took the time to show me that it was just a blocked secondary heat exchanger and a worn-out fan motor. He fixed it the same day and even cleaned out some dust buildup while he was at it. What I liked most was that he didn't try to scare me into buying a new unit; he said the one I have still has a good 5 years left if I take care of it. Their pricing was very fair, and they actually showed up when they said they would, which is a miracle in this city with the traffic. Definitely worth a call before you commit to a full replacement!
